Lesson 43 I always behave myself! Listen to the recording and then answer this question: Who will take Lucy to the dance and who will pick her up?
LUCY: Dad, there was a dance at school last month, and I didnˇt go. Thereˇll be another one next Friday night. Can I go? WILLIAM: Whoˇll be at the dance?
LUCY: Itˇll be a school event. There will be some French students, but there wonˇt be any outsiders. And our teachers will be there, too.
WILLIAM: That sounds reasonable. What time will it start? LUCY: At half past seven.
WILLIAM: And how long will it last? LUCY: For two and a half hours. Itˇll finish at 10.
WILLIAM: All right, Lucy. Your mother will take you there, and Iˇll pick you up. Be at the school gates at 10 oˇclock sharp. Is that clear?
LUCY: Yes, Dad. Thanks. WILLIAM: And Lucy, you will behave yourself, wonˇt you? LUCY: Of course, Dad. I always do!
Lesson 47 A quiz
Listen to the recording and then answer this question: How many people are there to the square mile in Australia? ROBERT: Lucy, Iˇm writing a quiz for my class, and I want to try it out. Can I try it out on you, please? LUCY: OK.
ROBERT: Which is the highest mountain in the British Isles? LUCY: Itˇs Ben Nevis, of course!
ROBERT: Whatˇs the longest river in the world? LUCY: Iˇm not sure. Is it the Nile, or the Amazon? ROBERT: Itˇs the Nile. I looked it up yesterday. The Nile is longer than the Amazon.
LUCY: Is it? ROBERT: Yes. Theyˇre both long rivers. It isnˇt obvious, is it? LUCY: No. Itˇs a good question.
ROBERT: Which continent has the lowest population density? LUCY: Goodness, Robert. I donˇt know! Australia?
ROBERT: No! Itˇs a trick question. Australiaˇs a continent, and it has only six people to the square mile. But obviously the answer is ˉAntarcticaˇ!
Lesson 49 Karen saves some money
Listen to the recording and then answer this question: Which suit does Karen prefer?
KAREN: Which of these two suits do you prefer, William? The one on the right or the one on the left?
WILLIAM: Theyˇre both the same. Theyˇre both the same size. Theyˇre both the same colour. And theyˇre both the same style.
KAREN: They both look the same, but theyˇre very different in quality. One is made of linen, and the other is made of microfibre. The microfibre one is cheaper than the linen one.
WILLIAM: Which one do you prefer, Karen? KAREN: Iˇll have the microfibre one. It isnˇt as expensive as the linen one.
WILLIAM: Are you sure? I canˇt tell the difference, but you can. I want you to be happy with it.
KAREN: Thatˇs OK. Iˇm saving money on the suit. So now I want to buy a pair of shoes to go with it.
Lesson 53 Pocket money
Listen to the recording and then answer this question: When will Lucy pay Robert back?
LUCY: Have you got any money, Robert? ROBERT: A little. Why? LUCY: Can you lend me some? Just for a week.
ROBERT: How much do you want? LUCY: Just a few pounds. Well, ten pounds, actually.
ROBERT: Ten pounds! Thatˇs a lot! Why havenˇt you got your own money? We both get the same every month. LUCY: Yes, but youˇve always got more money than me.
ROBERT: You always spend your pocket money at the beginning of the month. LUCY: I know! And you always save yours. Youˇre a good boy, and Iˇm a bad girl!
LUCY: Please, Robert! Iˇll pay you back on Saturday.
ROBERT: All right then. But only for a few days. LUCY: Thanks! Youˇre the best!

Lesson 43 Does anyone still knit?
Listen to the recording and then answer this question: Does Jannerˇs still sell knitting needles? Why?/Why not?
POLLY: Do you know where I can buy knitting needles, Annie? ANNIE: No, Iˇm afraid shops like that have disappeared these days. Maybe people donˇt knit any more.
POLLY: I knit! Iˇm knitting something for my nieceˇs new baby! Or I will knit something for her, if I can find the right needles!
ANNIE: Have you tried Jannerˇs? POLLY: Yes, I have! I had a mad conversation with the Sales Assistant yesterday. ANNIE: What happened?
POLLY: I asked her where I could find knitting needles. She said they didnˇt have any. I said that I always used to buy knitting needles on the first floor, next to Ladiesˇ Fashions.
POLLY: She said that Jannerˇs had closed that department years ago. She said, ˉWe donˇt sell knitting needles now. Nobody asks for them any more.ˇ
POLLY: I said, ˉYouˇre mistaken. Iˇm here, and Iˇm still asking for them!ˇ
Lesson 47 No laughing allowed
Claire is chatting to Paul about her day in the photo library. Listen to the recording and then answer this question: What was the drawing like?
CLAIRE: Craig and I were in trouble at work today, Paul. PAUL: Why was that? CLAIRE: We laughed in the library. Itˇs against the rules. PAUL: What happened?
CLAIRE: While we were entering data on the system, Craig started to laugh. When I looked at his screen, I started to laugh, too. We couldnˇt stop.
CLAIRE: We were both still laughing when the Librarian came in. He asked us what was so funny. That set us off again.
CLAIRE: It was a story about an artist in California. He was camping in the desert when he decided to chain his legs together. PAUL: Why? CLAIRE: He wanted to draw them like that.
CLAIRE: Then, while he was working on the drawing, he lost the key. There he was in the desert, with a chain around his legs. He hopped for twelve hours to the nearest town. And he took the drawing with him.
CLAIRE: It was a pretty good drawing of two legs with a chain around them. Unfortunately the Librarian didnˇt see the joke!
Lesson 53 Jonno!
Lucy and Robert are buying some magazines at the station. Suddenly, Robert sees a face that he recognizes. Listen to the recording and then answer this question: Does Robert really like Jonnoˇs music?
ROBERT: Look at that man over there. Isnˇt he a singer or something? I know! Heˇs in that picture that you put on your ceiling! LUCY: Itˇs Jonno! My favourite singer!
ROBERT: Quick, Lucy! Go and ask him for his autograph! LUCY: Oh, no! I canˇt! Iˇm too shy! Can you ask him for me, Robert? ROBERT: Oh, all right.
ROBERT: Excuse me, sir. Arenˇt you Jonno, the famous singer? JONNO: Thatˇs right! ROBERT: I really liked the last album that you made! JONNO: Thank you.
ROBERT: Can I have your autograph, please? JONNO: Certainly. Where do you want me to sign? ROBERT: Here, on the magazine, please! Thank you!
ROBERT: Here you are, Lucy. Youˇll keep this magazine now for ever, I suppose! LUCY: Of course! Itˇs got Jonnoˇs autograph on it!
ROBERT: To tell you the truth, Lucy, I donˇt even know the name of his latest song!
Lesson 59 We all need to play more
Kelly is talking to Carol, another guest at Redstone Ranch. Listen to the recording and then answer this question: Why donˇt adults play more?
KELLY: Hi, Carol! Did you go to the yoga class yesterday? CAROL: No, I missed it. KELLY: So did I. The weather was so nice. I decided to go on the morning hike.
CAROL: How was that? KELLY: It was good. We went over the other side of the lake. CAROL: Did they walk fast?
KELLY: Not too fast, but it was fast enough for me. Iˇm not very fit. CAROL: Neither am I. Maybe Iˇll try the hike tomorrow.
KELLY: Do you get much exercise at home? CAROL: I go to a dance class once a week. But itˇs not enough. How about you?
KELLY: I walk to the bus every day. Thatˇs not enough either. CAROL: I ask myself how I can get more exercise in my ordinary life. But I donˇt have any good ideas. Do you?
KELLY: No, I donˇt, but my husband, Jed, does. He says adults donˇt find time to play. He says we all need to play more. The trouble is, most of us donˇt know how!
